Pre-Enrollment Requirements

 Foreign Exchange Pre-Enrollment Informational Sheet – Curtis High School

(Student on J-1 Visa Only)

University Place School District has established the following process for Foreign Exchange Student Application (non tuition status – J-1 Visa).  There are six openings yearly.

"Approved" organizations wishing to sponsor students may begin submitting the application packet to Curtis High School by January 15th, for the following school year.  All applications must be received by March 1.  The Foreign Exchange Student committee will select six students and notify families by May 1. 

*  Applications accepted starting January 15. 

*  The DEADLINE for submitting applications is March 1.  

*  Notification of acceptance or denial will be completed by May 1.

  • A foreign exchange student is a non-immigrant secondary student between the ages of 15 and 19 entering the University Place School District under the sponsorship of an approved foreign exchange organization for a maximum period of 12 months.
  • The student shall have English language competence and the academic ability to effectively participate in the regular programs at Curtis High School.
  • Foreign exchange students will be enrolled as full time students and will be subject to the same policies, rules of conduct and attendance requirements as regular students.

  • J-1 Visa foreign exchange students attending their 12th grade year will be awarded a certificate of attendance in lieu of a diploma.

  •  Acceptance is for one school year only.  Three openings are available per year.

  • Students in the United States as visitors (B1/B2 Visa Status) may not, by law, enroll in public school.

  • An affidavit must be provided by the host/sponsoring organization that they will be providing a tutor when needed.  Curtis High School will not absorb the cost of an English language tutor in any way. 

  • Extracurricular costs will be at the expense of the host family/sponsoring organization.  Curtis High School will not provide funds for these activities/sports.
