March 12, 2020 8:30pm Update

Dear UPSD and Parents Guardians:

Earlier today, the Governor directed the closure of all schools in Pierce, King and Snohomish counties for the next six (6) weeks in an effort to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus.  The closure will begin on Monday, March 16th and continue through April 24th.

Schools will operate on normal schedules on Friday, March 13th. Please remind your students to bring home essential books, materials, equipment and supplies tomorrow afternoon so they will be available for use over the next several weeks.  We also ask that parents consider what medications or other items need to be at home.  If parents are uncomfortable sending their students to school tomorrow, this absence will be excused.

We are committed to helping our students and parents get through this difficult time. Breakfast and lunch will be available for all students beginning on Monday, March 16th at one or more schools.  Additional information about the time, location and procedures for these meal sites will be sent out over the weekend.

We are particularly committed to finding ways to support parents who are health care workers or first responders and who need assistance with their school-age children during the duration of the closure.  If you work in one of these essential areas and need assistance for your school-age children, please email your child’s Principal and provide the name of your student, your employer, your job title and the best way to contact you.  District staff will reach out to these families to develop plans for the weeks ahead.

Preparations are also underway to provide supplemental learning activities and other supports for students during the closure.  We will provide ongoing communications to parents as we develop more detailed plans in the coming days.

Thank you and good night.

Sincerely,

Jeff Chamberlin
