Dear CHS Parent/Guardian:

Thank you for your support, patience and efforts during this unprecedented time.  As we continue to work together to help students learn from home, it is important you and your student are aware of our plan regarding final grades for the semester.  OSPI recently released strict grading guidelines that all school districts in Washington State are required to follow during school closures.

The guidelines are as follows:

  • All students will receive either a letter grade (A, B, C or D) or an Incomplete.

  • All students will have the opportunity to keep or improve their grade in every class through distance learning opportunities through the end of the school year.  We strongly encourage ALL students to participate in distance learning in all classes through the end of the year.

  • No student will receive a grade lower than what was in the grade book at the time of closure (March 13, 2020).

  • No student will receive an F or a “no credit” as a final grade.

  • Students with an F on March 13, 2020 who do not engage in distance learning will receive an Incomplete.

Keep or Improve Letter Grade (Letter Grade Posted on Transcript and 0.5 Credit Earned)

Students with an A, B, C, or D grade in as of March 13, 2020 can keep their current grade or work with their teachers to improve their grade.  We strongly encourage ALL students to regularly participate in distance learning through the end of the school year.  The skills and knowledge students gain this spring will be important to help them achieve success in their next class, grade, or other post-secondary pursuit.  There may be additional work students need to complete to improve their grade.  Teachers will inform students about how they will be able to improve their grade in a class in an upcoming communication.

Receive an Incomplete Grade (Incomplete Posted on Transcript and 0 Credits Earned)

Students with an F grade as of March 13, 2020, and who do not participate in distance learning for the remainder of the school year, will earn an Incomplete for the end of the semester reported on their transcript.  Students earning an Incomplete will need to attend summer school, enroll in online classes, or demonstrate proficiency in another way to earn credit for the course.  We highly recommend any student who had an F at closure engage in distance learning to improve their grade to a passing letter grade.

Again, we strongly encourage ALL students to strive for excellence and put forth the effort to improve their grade in every class during this time.  Teachers may resume entering grades again beginning on April 29, 2020.

We will send additional communication to students enrolled in Dual Credit or Running Start courses, as well as to all seniors in the Class of 2020, in the near future.

Thank you for your partnership.  Please reach out to any member of our team if we can answer questions as we move forward.

Warmly and with gratitude,

Tom Adams
