DECA Viks dominate at Regionals January 2019!!

On Thursday January 17, 2019, the Regional DECA Competition was held at the Tacoma Convention Center. Curtis High School DECA had 18 students that will be advancing to the State competition in March 2019.

January Advisory Meeting was a HUGE SUCCESS!

Thank you to all those who attended our Advisory meeting last night. We started our meeting with a recent article from ASCD about the success of CTE programs, evaluated our current facilities and instructional material, and then came back together for a rich conversation about goals and strengths of our growing CTE program.

Veterans Day 2017

The Viking Company Cadets of Curtis High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers' Training hosted over 25 Veterans from all branches of our armed forces during this year's Veteran's Day assembly. The Cadets coordinated all phases of the event from initial planning, scheduling a guest speaker, coordinating a tribute to each branch of the military and the grand finale a history of our nation's flag. 12 flags were presented from the initial "Don't Tread on Me" flag to today's 50 star flag.

Cadet Commander Clara Sodon was awarded the Military Order of World Wars medal for her superior leadership of the Viking Company during the coordination of such an extraordinary event.

18 Curtis Students took advantage of the field trip and were able to connect with over 150 colleges, apprenticeships, military and other agencies. Students could also attend Conducting a Thoughtful College Search or Financial aid class.

Thank you to our CTE Advsiors for attending our first 2017/2018 CTE Advisory meeting on October 18th.

These meetings are a great opportunity to share ideas and goals in supporting the Career & Technical Educational program at CHS. We apprepriate our advisors (parents, business partners, and community members) with their assistance in bridging student education with real-world opportunities.

NJROTC Brain Brawl 2017

The NJROTC unit at Curtis HS hosted the first ever Brain Brawl tournament in the Northwest.

Brain Brawl is an academic competition in a college knowledge bowl format. Cadets compete in teams of 4 and "buzz in" before their competitors do to answer questions and accrue points. Teams came from the Seattle area and one team traveled from Las Vegas. Teams have to opportunity to compete in the Brain Brawl National competition later in the school year in Florida.

The final results (top 5) were as follows: 1st Place - Clark HS (Las Vegas), 2nd Place - Stadium HS Team 1, 3rd Place - Curtis HS Team 2, 4th Place - Stadium HS Team 2 and 5th Place - Curtis HS Team 1.

Curtis NJROTC Fundraising Success!

The cadets of the Curtis HS NJROTC program conducted a fundraiser to raise money for their annual Basic Leadership Training camp. This 3 day camp was held at the CISPUS Learning center near Randle Washington. The fundraiser helped offset the cost for all 73 cadets that attended. The cadets conduct operations on the ropes challenge course, learn leadership skills and engage in team building exercises. The camp culminated with a hike up the mountain to Angel Falls.

The Curtis Stagecraft Cosmetology and Design students received hands-on exposure to the current hair and makeup design trends happening in the cosmetology program at Clover Park Technical College. The high school students were able to float around and experiment with the different styles all while learning the requirements to peruse post-secondary schooling and career options in cosmetology.
